The World was a very different place from when I was last at a concert, two years ago, but last night in Belfast’s SSE Arena- listening to the screams of thousands of people- it felt just the same. Myself and thousands of other 5 Seconds of Summer fans, have been counting down the days to see them live in concert, this got me thinking; what is it about concerts and seeing an artist live, that many people enjoy so much?

I spoke to people at the concert to find out what exactly it was about concerts that got their hearts’ racing. “For me, it’s not just seeing the actual band live- it’s about the community that we have as fans, it feels like one big family.” Says Katie Lynch, a 19 year old student in Belfast.

As there has been so much in the air, regarding the pandemic, many people have feared big gatherings of people and wondered if the risk of getting covid-19 was too high to go to such an event.

Niall McDaid, a student at Queens, said this regarding the pandemic and concerts. “I was worried about how safe tonight would be, I was debating with myself whether to come or not, but I’m glad I did. 5 Seconds of Summer are my favourite band and they haven’t been to Belfast in 6 years, so who knows when they next will be?”

Concerts are a funny thing, you pay money to see people, when you hear it described it almost sounds silly. But, to me, there’s nothing quite like a concert to help you just feel alive. This one in particular was great for me, I’ve been a fan for ten years and it was just a rush of nostalgia.
